Tomorrow, it will have been three months since I had surgery on my right foot.

It’s been three months of ups and downs, crying fits and set backs, determination and triumph.

As of today, I’m mostly still in my boot. I have worn other shoes a few times on the gimpy foot, and it feels glorious to let it breathe and hang out in the Florida sunshine. However, usually within an hour, my foot starts to hurt. Badly. My shoe of choice has always been flip flops, and it HURTS like heck to wear them on that foot after a bit…mainly because my toes can’t curl down now. Well, scratch that – they curl, but the big one and second one HARDLY curl down at all. It’s a bit comedic. The big toe will likely never curl again, due to the placement of the screw.

Only problem with that is, generally you need your toes to “grip” your flip flops, so it has kind of fallen off of my foot a few times.

I have been so antsy with getting out and getting active again. It’s been really hard on me mentally to see people running as I’m gimping along in my boot. I had to give up my Dumbo entry for early September because I knew in my heart that there was no way I’d be able to compete with that many miles. My physical therapist was trying to help get me to that goal, but even he knew deep down it wasn’t going to happen. So, instead of Dumbo, I’m going Dopey – which is probably worse on my foot in the long run (ha), but, it’s a huge goal.

My first OFFICIAL race is…well…see that fancy pants button on the right over there? Yes, I’m actually going to compete in an Iron Girl event. Nothing like having that as my first official thing once I get back out on the road. It’s minimal running for me, but mixing in swimming and biking, and I’m both nervous and excited all at the same time. My first “big” race after that is the Tower of Terror 10 Miler, then on to Wine and Dine in November.

I’m trying to keep myself upbeat about all of this.

But it’s still so hard.

I got some new kicks about a month ago, and I was SUPER stoked about them. Proceeds went to the One Fund for Boston, and these bad boys GLOW IN THE DARK – which is awesome for my night and early morning races, but not so awesome when you wake up at 2 a.m. to go to the bathroom, and then wonder what that weird glowing thing is on the ground. They perked me up for a few days, but as they sit there on the floor, unworn and unused, I get a little pang of guilt in my stomach for purchasing them so early on.

I’m trying to keep my eyes on the prize for Tower of Terror, Iron Girl, Wine and Dine, and Dopey. I’m participating in Bike to Work Day this Friday with my coworkers, and will wear sneakers to go the 7 miles from downtown to our offices.

But my brain keeps playing tricks on me. Tells me that I’ll never get back to the way I used to run, tells me that if I attempt to give it my all when I’m given the all clear, my foot will do something and I’ll have to take a backseat again.

I’m trying to keep a good humored mood about “das boot”, but it’s JUST. SO. HARD.

I think it’s hard for me to maintain a good attitude about it because whenever I look in the mirror, I see this person:

In Las Vegas in 2003, roughly 240 pounds.

I worry that if I don’t get back to my active lifestyle, I’m going to pile on the pounds. It’s a legitimate thought, one that weighs on me daily. No pun intended. However, I KNOW I don’t look like that. It’s just my silliness from sitting around that is making me feel like I do.

Luckily, Medifast keeps me mainly on my nutrition road. Most of my days look like this:

But once in awhile, I have a splurge, and it looks a little like this:

That’s a S’mores coffee from Hash House a Go Go. I’ll spare you what my lunch looked like. It was obviously NOT a healthy lunch, but I felt it was deserved that day. More often than not, I still reach for my Medifast goodies, and while at work, no one even blinks an eye when I’m standing there eating a Medifast brownie with some peanut butter, a cup of soup, a shake, or a bar. In fact, I have a desk drawer where I keep most of my stuff for snacky emergencies – and it happens to be the drawer that the office does into for keys to the closet, or items for traveling…so my coworkers see my meals all of the time.

Definitely helps to keep me in check!

But still, when I finish the day and go to bed, I still feel a little sad and wistful, and hope that the following day my foot will feel a little bit better. Recently, one of my coworkers started a blog, and at the end of her first post she had written this:

If you want it, do what it takes to get it. Don’t let anyone stand in your way, most importantly yourself. Surround yourself with positive influences and be strong in the times you have to stand alone.

While the past few weeks have been hard, reading that line helped me out quite a bit. Keep moving forward.

And that’s what I’m trying to remember.

(Oh, hey, complete side note – I’m playing with Keek. You can see me and my goofy children right here!)

When I was little, I remember sitting at the dining room table as my Dad would drink a cup of tea in the evenings after a meal. He would put in a little bit of creamer into the steaming hot cup while letting the tea seep for several minutes, all the while chatting away about the day. I have fond memories of the smell of the tea, the sound of the spoon clinking against the side of the cup as he stirred the mixture of tea and creamer together, and the chatter we would share. I’ve grown up drinking tea the same way, and the smell of seeping tea immediately takes me back to my childhood.

One of my favorites parts (in one of my favorite childhood stories even) was the Mad Tea Party in Alice in Wonderland. Nothing excited me more than imagining what it was like to sit there with zany hats, loads of treats all over the table, all while sipping tea (much like I did when I was little). Whenever that scene would pop up in the movie, my son’s eyes would light up as he watched the tea pots dance and whistle, the cups of tea flying about the table. We recently read the story, and he loved hearing about the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Doormouse, and Alice taking part in this fantastic tea party.

I decided that for Mother’s Day, I’d have a little tea party of our own. And I knew exactly which type of tea I would get – Bigelow Tea. With the many different varieties available, I knew that the kids and myself would have plenty of choices to appease our palates, and we could have a fun little party while enjoying a comfort drink.

Yesterday morning, I took Zachary to Walmart to shop (you can see our full shopping experience here on my Google + album) for a “mysterious party” that we were going to have. He was definitely intrigued and asked a ton of questions, but I wasn’t letting him know what exactly we were up to.

I was happy to see the different choices available for Bigelow Tea. We ultimately chose Peppermint, English Tea, and Vanilla Chai to try out. I was pleased to see that it was a very decent price for the tea in comparison to other national brands.

I also added different treats to the cart (and he still didn’t know why!), and before long, we were ready to head home to get ready for the mysterious party.

I sent the kiddos away as I got the scene ready – in the story, Alice walks into a grand party with cookies, cakes, pies, and other miscellaneous treats nestled amongst the teacups. I decided to make it a little more low key, but had plenty of goodies. Fruit, cupcakes, marshmallows, cookies to decorate, a variety of tears to choose from – I was hoping for a hit.

And a hit it WAS. The kids came out and were so surprised – I explained that we were having a Mad Hatter party for Mother’s Day, and we’d decorate some cookies while drinking tea and chatting. They decided I didn’t need a hat since I already had a headband in; I was the honorary Alice. Maddy was the crazy March Hare and Zach was the Mad Hatter. Seemed fitting.

As the kids dove into the cookies for decoration, I asked which flavor of tea each one wanted. Zach chose Vanilla Chai, Maddy chose Peppermint. I felt that English Tea was fitting since Alice was an English story. As I poured the hot water into the teacups, the scent of seeping tea filled the air, I was immediately taken back to the times I sat at the table with my Dad as he made his tea.

We had a grand time. Each kiddo really enjoyed their chosen tea, and I loved the warmth from the time we spent together as a family. Couldn’t ask for a better Mother’s Day, and it’s yet another memory I can add to my list of growing ones – one that I know that I will think of fondly each time I catch the scent of Bigelow Tea in the air.

You can follow along with Bigelow Tea on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest – you can find some fantastic ideas for your own tea party, or learn about all of the different flavors that they offer!

FTC Disclosure: I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study Collective Bias® and FRAM #cbias #SocialFabric. All opinions in this post are my own.

ALLERGIES.

I’ve been a life long Floridian, and usually around this time of the year I end up with a sore throat, runny nose, itchy eyes, and have always chalked it up to a cold. I never once thought about it possibly being allergies…I have two kids, and they tend to bring home all sorts of junk. But when I realized that my kids were starting to complain of the same symptoms, and cold medicine wasn’t cutting it, we talked to our family doctor and was told it was allergies.

Really, I was surprised. At least it explained why my son liked to sit like this while watching a movie. I think.

After taking allergy medication instead of cold medication, changing the air filters in the air conditioner unit and in the bedrooms, we were feeling better – but we were all noticing how we were still sneezing and watery eyed while going out and about. It felt like we couldn’t get relief unless we stayed in the house – why were we all having so many issues riding in the car?

After talking with one of my girlfriends, she asked me if I’d changed the air filter in my car in some time. I honestly had no idea there was even one IN there. I was pretty excited when I was asked to get a FRAM Fresh Breeze air filter and try it out. I had no idea that there were air filters with Arm & Hammer in it; I knew the little boxes in your fridge helped with odors. Could an air filter with Arm & Hammer in it really help out with allergy issues? I was anxious to see if it would help with our pesky allergies while driving around town.

I picked one up at Walmart while shopping (you can see my shopping experience through my Google + album here), and was a little overwhelmed with the many choices of filters. There was a reference guide hanging from the shelf to use – VERY simple. You simply look up your car make/model/year, and it tells you which filter to get.

In my case, it was filter # CF10381.

The instructions made it very simple to locate where the air filter was. Once I pulled it out, I dropped it on the ground in disgust. THIS was what has been riding around with me for years? GROSS, GROSS, GROSS! No wonder we all felt so disgusting during allergy season! If you think about it, you’re breathing in this stuff day in and day out – that’s worse than standing outside, since in the car your air just recirculates over and over.

I put the new filter side by side next to the old one, and was still completely grossed out at how much dirt, dust, leaves, and other little nasty things that there were in there. I was extremely happy to be ditching the old one and putting in the new one ASAP.

After installation, which took all of a whopping 5 minutes, we went out and about…and almost immediately, we noticed that the car smelled and felt fresher. It’s been five days since we installed the filter, and the car honestly has a wonderful smell to it – just cleaner all around. No more itchy, watery eyes or sneezing while riding anywhere!

I put a little note on my phone to change my filter twice a year, and will do it again in about 4 months. I also added a little written date on the oil change sticker on my car – if you’re changing your oil, why not go ahead and change your air filter as well?

FRAM is offering a wonderful deal at the moment – get $4 off by mail with a mail-in rebate. Buy any FRAM oil filer and FRAM Air Filter and receive $4 off! Their filters are already very inexpensive (I paid under $20 for mine), so this deal makes it even more affordable.

We highly recommend trying out the FRAM Arm & Hammer air filters for your car. I encourage you to check out their website and watch how easy it is to change the filter yourself!

Some afternoons about 3 p.m., I’m finding myself reaching for a coffee and wishing that I had something snacky to go along with it. I try to steer clear of candy as much as possible, but still want that sweet and savory mix of fruity and sugary flavors. On the weekends, I’ve found that I keep heading into a local Starbucks to grab a drink and a snack, and realized that it was more cost effective to have a similar treat at home. I headed off to Walmart to grab some grocery items, and to find the perfect mid afternoon snack to share with a piping hot cup of Starbucks coffee.

I had been hearing about a new Starbucks in store campaign called Delicious Pairings, but unfortunately, my local Walmart did not have the display. No worries, I went ahead and looked through the coffee options in the store and decided that the Medium House Blend sounded exactly like what I wanted – light, lively, balanced. I wandered over to the Bakery department and hemmed and hawed over several choices for awhile, and ultimately decided on the blueberry muffins. Nothing satisfies as a light, airy, sweet, and fruity blueberry muffin. The perfect, delicious pairing!

I took my treats home and was immediately ambushed by my toddler, bored, wanting a snack, and wanting to do a craft of some sort. As I got my coffee brewing, he took in several deep breathes and asked what smelled so good. I said it was the coffee, but he swore it was the blueberry muffin! I promised to share with him while we did a special Earth Day craft together.

I have seen several tutorials online of various things to do with your leftover coffee packages, and decided to let my son take part in one craft. As the coffee brewed, I put the remaining unbrewed grounds into a Tupperware container for safe keeping, and turned the coffee bag inside out (but not before noticing this awesome comment on the bag – free coffee!).

I washed the outside of the bag with soap and water, then dried it off and laid it on a towel, along with some Sharpie markers. I still didn’t tell him what we were up to at first.

When the coffee maker beeped, I poured myself a cup of coffee, a cup of milk for my son, and decided that we could share the muffin since it was so large. I brought it to the table with two forks, and he eagerly dug in. I sampled a bite of the muffin, took a sip of the Medium House Blend coffee, then took another bite of the tasty bakery treat – and relished in the satisfying feeling at how perfectly matched the coffee was with the muffin. Just the right amount of sweetness between the two, and it still felt light and airy.

As we munched on the blueberry muffin, I finally relented and told my son what we were doing with the Starbucks bag – we were making a “coffee flower pot” with the bag and used coffee grounds. He was VERY excited to decorate the bag how he saw fit, and soon we had a colorful flower pot, waiting for the coffee grounds to go into it.

After pouring the used coffee grounds in, we put the flower that he had selected earlier in the week into the bag, then sat it in the window so it could catch some rays. Unfortunately, it’s been rainy and cloudy here, but we know that Florida’s sunny rays will soon make his flower grow big and strong.

I give this delicious pairing a big two thumbs up, and if I keep going through this coffee as quickly as I have been, we’ll have a whole windowsill full of flowers soon! Next, I’ll have to figure out what to do with all of the blueberry muffin trays…hmmmm…..

This past year has been one of the busiest years of my life. My full time job keeps me running (I put in over 100 hours every two weeks!), I’m a race runner, my daughter is involved in a few extra curricular activities, and my son has numerous play dates. After my foot surgery, there were some nights I was so exhausted, I would have happily just grabbed junk food from a fast food restaurant and called it a night.

Of course, these two were always happy to go get junk food, but after losing a good amount of weight and changing my eating habits, I was cringing at the thought of feeding them that junk, all because I was too tired to cook.

I found myself living on coffee at times. This isn’t a healthy lifestyle for me, let alone my kids!

When my son recently drew a picture of me, he drew me with a cup of coffee in my hand. I asked where my food was, and he said I only drank coffee, and they only ate Chick Fil A. I knew then it was time to change up our unhealthy eating habits, and quickly.

It’s really hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle when you’re a 9-5 family. With the option for drive thru’s, take out, pizza delivery drivers, there is always some excuse why we don’t need to cook a healthy meal for ourselves. My main concern for a healthy meal is my time – time is EVERYTHING to me right now. I can’t spend an hour cooking a meal, then another hour cleaning up. I need something that will take minutes to prepare, with minimal cleanup, with healthy choices.

I’ve been hearing some pretty rave reviews on some Healthy Choice items, so I decided to grab Maddy and head out to Walmart one evening to try out their Crustless Chicken Pot Pies and Greek yogurt (you can see our shopping adventure in my Google + album). The kids love having a dessert item after their meal, and I thought giving them Greek yogurt was a healthier alternative to ice cream. Armed with some $1 off coupons (located on my sidebar of this blog!), we charged the store with grumbly tummies.

Walmart has been cleaning up their appearance lately, and it’s been a nicer shopping environment. After getting a few items we needed from Lawn and Garden, we headed back into the Grocery side to locate our Healthy Choice meal.

We had SO many options to choose from. I wasn’t aware of all of the different lines from Healthy Choice!

We found our entrees, then had a hard time deciding between the Greek yogurts. They all sounded so good! We ultimately chose the Dark Fudge Swirl, Vanilla Bean, and Strawberry yogurts.

After making our purchases (and using our $1 off coupons!), we headed home. Last night was the perfect evening to try the meals out. I worked from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., ran home to feed the kids, and literally had ten minutes until I had to leave to come back to work (and then was at work until 12:30 a.m., whew!). I didn’t want to leave the kitchen a gigantic mess, and couldn’t waste time cooking a bunch of items, so out came the Crustless Pot Pies and Greek yogurts. In 4 minutes, I had a hot, fresh, delicious, and HEALTHY meal for all.

I didn’t even have to get another plate dirty – the meal came in a throwaway bowl that contained the mess. The kids were thrilled with their dinners. The pot pie was a perfect blend of colorful and crunchy vegetables, savory chicken broth, chunks of moist chicken breast, and little bites of chicken pot pie crust. They gobbled up their dinners and made numerous, “Mmmm!” sounds while enjoying it.

After finishing their pot pies, they immediately asked for dessert. I handed over the Greek yogurt, and waited to see if Zachary would notice that it wasn’t actually ice cream.

He never noticed it wasn’t the sugar filled dessert, and kept gobbling away at his Greek yogurt!

I was so incredibly impressed with the Healthy Choice dinner we had. In under 5 minutes, we had a piping hot and healthy meal, then had a delicious dessert that tasted like it should have been SO bad for you, but wasn’t. We are definitely going to be leaning on Healthy Choice for quick and healthy dinners in the future!

If you’d like to learn more about Healthy Choice and their menu items, you can follow them on Twitter, or on their Facebook page. And don’t forget to grab the $1 off coupons on my sidebar to save money!

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—(April 2, 2013) Find your roar. Score some swampy goo. Devour scrumptious concoctions. Test your mettle and see if you are made for swamp life livin’ at its finest. Get down and dirty and become honorary ogres when you celebrate Family Fun with Shrek & Friends taking place at Gaylord Palms Resort on April 13 and May 4, 2013.

Mix and mingle and rub elbows with the friendliest — er, mightiest of ogres, the one and only Shrek! Create some ooey gooey swampy slime, and then feast on swamp sludge and eyeball cookies (green milk and M&M cookies). If that doesn’t satisfy your fever for the family fun factor, head outside for a Crack-A-Lackin’ Pool Party and Splash ‘N’ Screen viewing of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc.’s film, Shrek Forever After. You will want to capture this sticky situation, so pack those cameras!

Package guests will also be fit for fun with your very own DreamWorks autograph book and Shrek ears amenities, along with a DreamWorks activity book, all received at check-in. Additionally, you will embark on an adventure like no other in the Rise of the Guardians Adventure Scavenger Hunt. Join forces with Jack Frost and the legendary Guardians to solve exciting puzzles, crack codes and find the clues needed to defeat the evil spirit, Pitch, and his devious plan to engulf the world in darkness and fear. Are you brave enough to take the challenge? Themed prizes can be retrieved at Concierge.

Why let the fun stop there? For an additional charge, guests can start the next day with a ShrekFeast Interactive Character Breakfast. Kids will love becoming an honorary Ogre and joining Shrek and friends for a fairytale feast fit for a king. Tableside hugs included! This experience features a Magic Fountain bubbling over with intoxicating chocolate potions and Shrek-shaped waffles with syrup.

This exclusive ogre-ific event is part of The DreamWorks Experience and takes place at Gaylord Palms on April 13 and May 4. Visitwww.gaylordpalms.com today to book your Family Fun with Shrek & Friends package.
My work schedule has been so crazy lately that I find that I am so thankful at how easy it is to take Medifast on the go. I’ve been such a fan of Medifast’s Mixed Berry Crunch Cereal that it’s literally become a staple for breakfast every.single.day. I usually have a cup of coffee and water with it, and then I’m set for a few hours.

I still receive regular emails asking what my day looks like food wise, and it generally looks like this:

Breakfast: Mixed Berry Crunch Cereal
Snack: Cinnamon Pretzels
Lunch: Soup or shake
Snack: Crunch Bar and almonds
Dinner: This varies, but a lean and green meal

You may have noticed that I haven’t listed a 5th Medifast meal; I am just not hungry by that time of the evening anymore.

I certainly miss my running right now. Unfortunately, you can’t run with this amazingly tacky boot on:

Aw yeah, I’m the girl who still wears a high heel on my good foot, and a surgical boot on the other. Let me tell you, I look HOT every day.

To be truthfully honest with my readers, of course I take part in some sugary goodness now and then – I just take it easy. My coffee has a bit too much creamer and sugar, I’ll partake in an occasional Butterbeer, and I know in my head that I’ll have to work it off. I can see when I’ve overdone it too much (take for instance my bathing suit picture below – that scary thigh has GOT to be worked on! and yes, my son loves to make funny faces at the most inopportune times) and it’s a good reminder to continue to eat healthy and stick to the healthier Medifast lifestyle.

With Easter coming up, I have been drooling over the aisles and aisles of Easter candy, but have decided to completely avoid it this year and make the Medifast Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups instead. It tastes just as good as the real thing, and I think I’ll toy around with putting it into one of the Easter molds that I have.

I’m looking forward to traveling a little more this year, and am hoping my foot heals up in time to head out to California for the Disneyland Dumbo Dare. And did you hear that Walt Disney World is now doing a Dopey Challenge – 48.6 miles!! I am DYING to do that one! I would really have to up my training schedule, and am happy to know that I would never have to worry about having to find healthy foods to bring along with me – Medifast is always by my side.

What do you do to keep yourself in check while traveling, or when a holiday comes up? Any healthy eating tips to share?
